Mino Raiola is prepared to steer Matthijs de Ligt towards Manchester City ahead of Manchester United, reports say. The agent of the in-demand defender also represents Paul Pogba and is fuming with the way his star client has been treated at United. Pogba has fallen out with Jose Mourinho, who stripped the midfielder of the vice-captaincy and has repeatedly hit out at the Frenchman.
The Sun claim Raiola is considering blocking United’s move for the £61million-rated De Ligt should the row with Pogba continue. Despite only being 19 years old, De Ligt has attracted the attentions of United, City and Barcelona in the last 12 months. Ajax are fielding enquiries from several clubs and an offer of £52m from an unnamed club has already been lodged.
De Ligt is still developing at Ajax, but City think he could be the successor to Vincent Kompany.
United are desperate for defensive reinforcements after a dismal start to the season, and three Premier League defeats already on the books this campaign. But United will find it hard to convince Raiola to do business with them and are likely to miss out on the defender.
Meanwhile, Pogba’s recent woes continued on Thursday night as France were held to a 2-2 draw by Iceland. United’s playmaker was withdrawn in the 65th minute with France 2-0 down and watched from the sidelines as his team-mates launched a late comeback. A 90th minute penalty from Kylian Mbappe completed the fightback and avoided what would have been an embarrassing defeat for the world champions.
