Why I want to leave Chelsea - Hazard

Eden Hazard believes he is the best player in the world right now, but fears he needs to leave Chelsea and move to La Liga to prove it – though he won’t leave this January. The Belgian has been in sensational form for the Blues at the start of the season, scoring seven times and laying on a further three assists in just eight games – a key contribution every 57 minutes. His scintillating form has seen him linked with a big-money move to Real Madrid, and he has previously hinted at the possibility of swapping Stamford Bridge for the Bernabeu.

Hazard is away on international duty with Belgium at the moment, but his future was once again the main topic of conversation at a pre-match press conference ahead of Friday’s clash with Switzerland.

Asked if he feels he is the best player in the world, he said: ‘Yes. I say yes just before so I say yes to you.’

He was then asked if, to win the Ballon d’Or, he would need to go to Spain, and replied: ‘That’s why I want to go maybe.’ There has not been a Ballon d’Or winner from outside of Spain since 2008, when Cristiano Ronaldo was playing for Manchester United, while Michael Owen is the only other English-based winner since the 1960s. Hazard did at least confirm that he would not seek a move in January, though come next summer he would only have a year left on his contract and be in a very strong position to negotiate an exit – just as countryman Thibaut Courtois did this summer.

Asked if he can still get even better, Hazard said: ‘Of course, we can always improve in football. ‘We can score more goals, more assists. I think I am in a team that is helping me as well also. So yeah I can improve.’
