Lionel Messi fans reacted furiously to the claim that Cristiano Ronaldo is better than the Argentine star.
Ronaldo scored a hat-trick against Lithuania on Tuesday night to take his international goal tally to 93.
The Portuguese star also grabbed an assist in the 5-1 win in Lithuania.
In doing so, he also broke the record for most European qualifying goals with 25.
His tremendous display opened up the debate once again as to who is better, him or his old rival Messi.
The pair have already made footballing history, and cemented their place in many fans eyes as the two best players of all time.
But there are some who choose to argue about who is the better player, and fans have been plagued with a mix of stats and opinion over the years.
Ronaldo has 93 international goals compared to Messi’s 68, but the Argentine has played 24 games less for his country.
At club level, Ronaldo has bagged an incredible 602 goals in 808 games, compared to Messi’s 608 in 719.
Despite that there is being virtually nothing to separate them, fans still took to Twitter after Ronaldo’s hat-trick against Lithuania to debate his status as the greatest of all time.
“How the hell can u say Ronaldo is better than Messi at any level when Messi scores just as many, if not more goals a year, PLUS assists, sets up and participated in plays, is the best dribbler of all time and so on?” one asked.
Another joked: “Cristiano Ronaldo with a proper Cristiano Ronaldo hattrick tonight: Penalty, Goalkeeping error, Tap-in."
“Not Messi’s fault he doesn’t get to play against part timers in the South American qualifiers is it?” another posted.
“Messi all day everyday twice on Sundays," one tweeted.
“Cristiano Ronaldo isn't the goat. Maradona, Messi and the Brazilian Ronaldo better. The end,” one fan fumed.
Another wrote of Ronaldo: “Unpopular opinion: he’s not top two players in the world anymore.”
