Elliott ineligible to face parent club this weekend

Elliott will miss this weekend’s clash against his parent club, Liverpool, due to conditions in the loan agreement that brought him to Aston Villa during the summer transfer window. However, the 22-year-old was unlikely to feature for Unai Emery’s side regardless, as he has found playing time hard to come by since his deadline-day arrival.

So far, Elliott has started only one Premier League match for Villa—a 3-1 home victory over Fulham last month—and has accumulated just 97 minutes of action under Emery. He was substituted at halftime in that game, with his only other start coming in the EFL Cup defeat to Brentford on penalties.

Villa are obliged to make Elliott’s loan move permanent for £35 million next summer, but that clause only activates once he reaches a set number of appearances. This means the midfielder could, in theory, return to Liverpool if he fails to meet the required threshold.
