NOVAK DJOKOVIC lifted the trophy but Roger Federer won the plaudits for his part in one of the greatest Wimbledon men’s finals ever seen.
Certainly it was the longest, and could only be decided after a controversial fifth-set tie-break introduced just this year.
And as he had done throughout the match, when it came to the end-of-set deciders, Novak Djokovic reigned supreme.
Nearly an hour after squandering two Championship points of his own, Federer slapped the ball into the net after Djokovic’s shot had been called out.
HawkEye over-ruled and the points was replayed. Federer served, Djokovic returned and then a massive hit the ball flying high into the Centre Court stands. And that was it.
Centre Court had willing Federer on to claim his ninth title after he played the best tennis and won the most points over five pulsating sets of tennis.
But as feisty as ever, it was Djokovic who secured the important ones to secure a 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, 4-6, 13-12 victory in 4hr 57min.
The Serb will probably never be as popular as the eight-time men’s champion and game’s greatest ever player.
But few could argue that he is anything but tennis’s fiercest ever battler.
