Tiger Roll emulates Red Rum and wins the 2019 Grand National

Tiger Roll cruised to victory in the 2019 Grand National becoming the first horse to win the world’s most famous steeplechase in consecutive years since Red Rum in 1974. The nine-year-old, ridden by Davy Russell, went off as the 4/1 favourite and justified those odds, cruising into the lead with two fences to jump and winning by a comfortable margin. ‘I can’t believe it,’ said Russell. ‘That’s the man there (pointing at trainer Gordon Elliott). Louise who looks after him does a great job.

‘At my age now to win two Grand Nationals – wow. Dad came over this year to watch. Gordon has been so good to me over my career. What can I say

Winning owner Michael O’Leary said: ‘It’s fantastic. He’s got to a stage where we want to mind him and every time he runs you think oh my god, please don’t let anything happen to him. ‘He’s unbelievable and to win two Grand Nationals is incredible. It’s also a great result for the punters.’ Trainer Elliott, meanwhile, added: ‘I don’t get upset very often… but this is unbelievable. ‘It was marvellous. He had a couple of stumbles but the the blinkers did the trick today.’
