Maurizio Sarri has challenged his Chelsea team to improve after they continued their fine run with a 3-0 victory over Southampton on Sunday. The Blues are yet to be beaten in the Premier League this season and won their sixth game of the campaign at St Mary’s. In-form Eden Hazard fired the visitors ahead on 30 minutes, before Ross Barkley doubled Chelsea’s lead in the second half.
Alvaro Morata added a third in injury-time as Chelsea – temporarily at least – returned to the top of the Premier League alongside Manchester City and Liverpool. Sarri was pleased with his team’s display but said Chelsea could control matches better and improve both defensively and offensively.
He said: ‘I think we can do better, they had two or three opportunities. We can do better, especially defensively. ‘We need to be in control of the match, we can do better in the defensive and sometimes offensive phase.
'Today we did wrong in two or three counter attacks. I think we have the possibility to improve.’ Sarri, who replaced Antonio Conte as Chelsea boss in the summer, also reiterated his belief that his team will struggle to close the gap on City and Liverpool this season. ‘It’s the same that I thought one week ago,’ he added. ‘I think Manchester City and Liverpool are a step forward. ‘We need to recover the gap. Now we are trying to cover the gap and we are working on that. I think it will be very difficult to cover so large a gap in one season.’
On Morata, who has now scored in consecutive games after a poor start to the campaign, Sarri said: ‘I am very happy for him. ‘It is important for the striker to score, to have scored in the Europa League and today. ‘But it was important the performance. He has played very well. I think we can restart easily now.’
