Why Manchester United fail to perform this season

Manchester United failed this summer because they didn’t sign Bruno Fernandes or a recognised striker.
That’s according to ESPN pundit Ian Darke.
Man Utd spent big during the summer, bringing in three key players.
They broke the world transfer record for a defender by bringing in Harry Maguire from Leicester for £90million.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also spent £50m on Crystal Palace right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
But despite their big summer spend, they opted against replacing Romelu Lukaku, who departed for Inter Milan.
Instead, they signed Swansea winger Daniel James in a replacement for Alexis Sanchez, who followed Lukaku to Inter.
Speaking on ESPN FC, Darke argued that United should have brought in a recognised striker as well as Fernandes, in an attempt to solve their early season problems.
Fernandes was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, but ultimately United opted against making a move for him.
“I don’t think they got it right in the summer again, they needed to do more in the transfer market,” Darke explained.
“In particular, I think they had to beef up the midfield.
“There was a player who they could have got - Bruno Fernandes, the excellent Portuguese midfielder who adds dynamism, but that deal wasn’t done.
“I know he was on the shopping list, he was on a few people’s shopping lists, they didn’t get him.
“They don’t really have someone who can pick the locks, and they don’t really have an out-and-out goalscorer.
“They’ve got one big success story and that’s Dan James, who has arrived with great speed.”
