Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer agreed to loan out Chris Smalling to Roma for one season, but the defender has other plans.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Chris Smalling do not see eye to eye over the purpose of the defender’s loan move to Roma.
The Englishman joined Roma on a season-long loan this summer after nine years at Old Trafford.
Smalling was Manchester United’s second-choice centre-back behind Victor Lindelof last term under both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but the arrival of Harry Maguire would have rendered him to the bench.
As a result, the club and player sought a move which would give the two-time Premier League champion more game time.
Stadio Olimpico chiefs came calling at the eleventh hour of the European transfer window and soon enough Smalling was in the Italian capital.
The 29-year-old is yet to make his first appearance for the squad but is already foreseeing future in The Eternal City.
"To be able to have the chance at a big club, and then if it prolongs and the club is happy, then I can definitely see a longer term future in Italy,” he said.
"I think this is an opportunity that came to me that I was very interested in and I'm very eager to come.
"It happened very quickly and I think if I focus on the next game, getting up to speed with training, in terms of the manager's methods and then hopefully have a very good season, then see what happens.”
