Former Uruguay and Atletico de Madrid footballer Diego Forlan
Former Uruguayan forward Diego
Forlan's is widely speculated to become the marquee player of Atletico
de Kolkata for the third season of ISL but the team owners remained
tight-lipped on the subject.
"We have not yet decided on our marquee player. We will announce the
name before the (August 28) deadline and he will be befitting," co-owner
Sanjiv Goenka told reporters on Friday.
The inaugural edition champions who finished second last year had a
terrible experience with their marquee player Helder Postiga in 2015 as
the Portuguese forward picked up an injury in the very first match of
the season and went on to miss the remainder.
"You learn from mistakes. Each franchise makes a team with an
objective to win. Nobody wants to make a team to do badly or lose. We
have had a selection process and the coach's choice will be final.
Selection is a subjective issue," Goenka explained.
The Golden Ball winner of the 2010 World Cup, Forlan, is second on
the honours roll of most capped Uruguayan players with 112 appearances
for La Celeste, scoring 36 goals.
The 37 year-old last played for Uruguayan Primera Division side Club
Atlético Peñarol at his home town Montevideo and scored eight goals in
31 games.
Forlan is best known for making 134 appearances between 2007-11 for ATK's co-owners Atletico Madrid where he scored 74 goals.
